Visiting the Mekong River Delta

The Mekong River Delta, beautiful and grand. The history is interesting and tense, but the rainforest is calming and gives you peace of mind. The area is a must visit for anyone who loves to take a peaceful journey!
The Mekong River Delta is a part of Southwest Vietnam and is a large network of different small rivers. All these rivers are part of the main Mekong River, but since it ends at the sea here, it has split into a network of smaller rivers.
Floating Markets
Very famous in the Mekong River Delta are the many markets that float on it. Traders bring food, good and fruits here to sell to dealers. These dealers sell the products in the shops in cities. Phung Hiep is the largest floating market in this area while Cai Be is the most well-known. The latter started developing in the 19th century and is always crowded.
Some traders and dealers on the floating markets live on the river. They seldom arrive on the mainland and live off of the markets. Taxi boats are common, so transportation shouldn’t be hard to find.
Nature
The nature surrounding the Mekong River Delta is unique. It’s jungles seem unexplored and make you feel like you’re Indiana Jones. The rivers are dark brown, thanks to the mud. Some areas are extremely small and look like a swamp in the middle of the rainforest. This uniqueness offers great photographic experiences and amazing times.
History
The rivers are very old and unlike many delta’s across the world, it was formed naturally. It was an important trading route in the first centuries. Until the 17th century, the area was known as Lower Cambodia and a part of the Khmer Empire. In the 17th century they allowed Vietnamese to settle which eventually lead to the area becoming a part of Vietnam. Knowing this history makes it interesting to know that many wars have been fought over the territory since. When you sail around the area, you wonder how many nature has been damaged and how the trees offer hiding. Nevertheless, this area seems so beautiful and untouched it’s awesome.
War on Water
The history of the Mekong River Delta is one of many wars. The delta saw heavy fighting during the Vietnam War. The Vietcong would fight here against the United States’ swift boats and hovercrafts. But what makes the delta famous however, is a different kind of war. In the 70’s, the Cambodian Khmer Rouge invaded this area, upon which Vietnam started invading Cambodia. These invasion eventually lead to the downfall of the Khmer Rouge.
Transportation
Many taxis can be found on the river, however you can always book tours at your hotel. The Mekong River Delta is beautiful and a must visit for everyone, whether it be for the floating markets or the beautiful nature. Narrow rivers, great food, everything is available in this beautiful Vietnam area.
